Decoding the 11+: How I Can Help Your Child Succeed?
As a qualified teacher and 11+ tutor, I understand the number one challenge in this exam: it’s not just about what children know, but about interpreting the unique way questions are asked.
Success in the 11+ depends on decoding logic and inference, skills that are often new to students. My lessons are specifically designed to bridge this gap.
Here is how I turn confusion into confidence across all four subjects:
- English Comprehension: The exam demands sophisticated “reading between the lines” (inference). I teach my students to become text detectives. We work together to identify keywords, analyse context clues, and understand literary devices. This way, they learn to confidently deduce what the author means, not just what they say.
- Maths & Numerical Reasoning: The challenge here isn’t just the calculation; it’s the complex, multi-step word problems. The exam tests how children apply their knowledge. I teach students to ‘translate’ these tricky word problems into a clear mathematical sum, identifying the real question being asked and following a logical step-by-step process.
- Verbal Reasoning (VR): This section is a puzzle, and it’s not taught in the school curriculum. I have a clear, structured method to teach the specific techniques needed for all 20+ question types. I give students the “keys” to unlock each type of puzzle, from hidden words to letter sequences.
- Non-Verbal Reasoning (NVR): This is a test of ‘thinking with shapes’ and can be baffling. I teach students a systematic toolkit to spot the patterns. We break the logic down into key rules like rotation, reflection, sequence, and coding so they have a clear method for tackling every abstract puzzle.
My job is to demystify the 11+. I break down these complex skills into manageable, step-by-step strategies so your child has the tools and the confidence to excel.
